From Anxiety to Empowerment: Journey to Holistic Healing & Functional Health

Anxiety and depression shaped much of my early adult life. Despite multiple visits to doctors and specialists, none of them could tell me what was wrong. My labs and scans were coming back normal. But I wasn’t ok. What the doctors said, and what I was feeling didn't match. That disconnect between what the tests showed and how I felt left me overwhelmed and frustrated. It sparked a deep need within to find solutions. It pushed me to explore beyond conventional medicine and led me to becoming a holistic health practitioner. I began providing Healing Touch as a method of addressing every cell in the body. Providing a safe environment for the body to heal became my passion.

After time went on, I realized I was missing a great benefit to be able to offer my clients. Before and after data. So, I started using Heart Math tools to show the effects of our healing sessions. But yet, I still felt I was missing a large piece of data. So, I explored even more.
I am excited to share that I'm going even deeper and becoming a student of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. This blog is my invitation for you to join me on this journey of learning, healing, and asking better questions about our health.

The Limits of Conventional Testing
When I first started experiencing intense anxiety and depression, I was told repeatedly that my labs were “fine.” But I wasn’t fine. Blood tests, scans, and routine checkups showed no obvious issues. This left me feeling frustrated and invisible. I knew something was wrong, but the standard tests didn’t capture it.
This experience is common for many people, especially women and moms, who often carry the emotional and physical weight of stress without clear answers from traditional labs. The problem is that many tests look for disease or damage but don’t always reveal the subtle imbalances in the nervous system, hormones, or gut that affect our wellbeing.
Discovering the Nervous System and Stress Physiology
My nursing background helped me understand the body’s stress response better. The nervous system plays a crucial role in how we feel and function. Chronic stress can dysregulate this system, leading to symptoms like anxiety, fatigue, and digestive issues.
One key hormone involved is cortisol, often called the stress hormone. It follows a daily pattern, peaking in the morning and tapering off by night. When this rhythm is off, it can cause mood swings, sleep problems, and immune dysfunction.
Learning about cortisol patterns and nervous system regulation gave me tools to start healing. For example, simple practices like deep breathing, mindfulness, and gentle movement helped calm my nervous system. These small changes made a big difference in how I felt day to day.
The Role of Hormones and Gut Health
Hormones are powerful messengers that influence mood, energy, and overall health. Imbalances in thyroid, adrenal, or sex hormones can contribute to anxiety and depression. Functional lab testing allows us to see these patterns more clearly than standard blood work.
Gut health is another piece of the puzzle. The gut-brain connection means that an unhealthy gut can affect mental health. I learned to look for signs of gut imbalance and inflammation, which often go unnoticed in routine exams.
By addressing gut health through diet, probiotics, and lifestyle changes, I noticed improvements in my mood and energy. This holistic approach considers the whole person, not just isolated symptoms.

Functional Labs and Whole-Person Healing
Functional Diagnostic Nutrition focuses on identifying root causes through detailed lab work that looks at hormones, digestion, nutrient status, and more. This approach helped me connect the dots between my symptoms and underlying imbalances.
For example, a saliva cortisol test revealed that my cortisol rhythm was flattened, explaining my constant fatigue and anxiety. A comprehensive stool test showed gut dysbiosis, which contributed to inflammation and mood issues.
With these insights, I could tailor my healing plan. This included targeted nutrition, a few supplements, stress management, and lifestyle adjustments. The process felt empowering because it was based on my unique biology, not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Empowerment Through Education and Practice
As nurse holistic health practitioner, I have the knowledge & experience to support others facing similar struggles. Now, as I train in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, I continue to deepen my understanding of how the body’s systems interact.
My journey has taught me that healing is not linear or quick. It requires patience, curiosity, and a willingness to ask better questions. When my labs were “fine,” but I wasn’t fine, I learned to trust my experience and seek answers beyond the surface.
If you are a healthcare practitioner or a mom feeling unheard or stuck, know that your experience matters. Listen to your body! There are tools and tests that can reveal hidden imbalances. You can take steps to regulate your nervous system, balance hormones, and improve gut health.

Moving Forward Together
My story is one of transformation from deep anxiety from trauma, grief from child loss, and complete dysfunction from years of unaddressed underlying stress. I felt lost in the system and now have found tremendous healing & clarity through holistic and functional approaches. I invite you to explore these ideas with me, to learn how patterns in the body can guide us to better health.
Start by listening to your body and noticing patterns in your energy, mood, and digestion. Consider working with practitioners who use functional labs to uncover hidden imbalances. Small changes in daily habits can support nervous system regulation and hormone balance.
Remember, your labs might be “fine,” but if you’re not fine, there is a path forward. Healing is possible when we look deeper and treat the whole person.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Let’s keep asking questions and learning together.
